*Serena Williams made her return to the court earlier this year rocking a fierce Black Panther-inspired catsuit, which she said made her feel like a “warrior princess.”

“I call it, like, my Wakanda-inspired catsuit,” she revealed. “We designed it way before the movie, but still, it kind of reminds me of that. I’m always living in a fantasy world, I always wanted to be a superhero and it’s kind of my way of being a superhero.”

She also explained at the time that she had a history of blood clots and the suit was specifically designed to help prevent the clots from forming while on the court.

Williams, 37, wore the compression catsuit at the 2018 French Open, prompting French Tennis Federation president Bernard Giudicelli to ban the one-piece.

During an interview with Tennis Magazine, Giudicelli stated: “We are going to ask the manufacturers to let us know what is coming. I believe we have sometimes gone too far. Serena’s outfit this year, for example, would no longer be accepted. You have to respect the game and the place.”

The ban sparked outrage on social media and support from folks like ex-pro tennis player Anne White (see clip below) and ex-Iran president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Now, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has clarified the rules for female players’ clothing, including compression pieces like Serena’s catsuit.

“Leggings and mid-thigh-length compression shorts may be worn with or without a skirt, shorts, or dress,” the organization wrote, as reported by the BBC.

But as noted by TMZ, Serena still faces problems with the catsuit, as the rule changes only apply to WTA Tournaments … NOT Grand Slams.

“I got involved with GreenSpace because I believe in the importance of clean cannabis, same as I believe in the importance of clean food,” Salley told Benzinga last March. “I always saw on movies that every drug was tested for purity. So why not test cannabis?”

Earlier this year, the former baller and his daughter, Tyla Salley, launched the premium cannabis brand Deuces22, named after his NBA number.

“There are a lot of cannabis brands all over the industry now, popping up and shutting down. But I wanted to make sure our brand was organic and, at the same time, luxury,” Tyla said. “I wanted people to know they can trust us, that we are not going to give them anything that can hurt them, but also that all the cannabis we provide is top shelf in every aspect, every time – and maintain this consistency over time.”

*Shareef O’Neal took to Twitter on December 13 to inform fans that he “made it” through a heart successful surgery and is now on the road to recovery.

“I made it, Thank you for all the love and support! I really appreciate all your thoughts and prayers, that’s what helped me through this surgery. I’m on the road to recovery, and I’ll be back soon…better than ever,” read a message on his official Twitter profile. His words, typed by Mimi O’Neal.

O’Neal, the son of Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal, was diagnosed with a heart condition in September during a routine check-up. He will reportedly miss his entire freshman season at UCLA, but he’s already talking about his return to the court.

O’Neal’s mother Shaunie posted some photos and a heartfelt message about her baby boy on her Instagram prior to his surgery:

“This morning was by far my toughest moment being a Mom. If only I could take his place today. Could I at least go with him in that operating room and hold his hand. Separating from him as he was wheeled off to surgery was heartbreaking. THATS MY BABY! I don’t care how old, how big, how grown my kids get I still want to protect them. I had no control over any of this. But there is a God, I trust and believe He is in there with my baby right now and has complete control.”

As reported by SB Nation, surgery was required to fix an “electrical problem” in Shareef’s heart.

O’Neal, a four-star recruit and 6’9 power forward, was one of the top high school basketball players in the country this year and one of five top-100 recruits that committed to the UCLA Bruins.

*Remember the story the other day about the African child that former NBA great Dikembe Mutombo brought to the US for a surgery to remove a life-threatening tumor on his face? Unfortunately, the youngster went into cardiac arrest during the operation.

According to TMZ, sources familiar with the surgery say that at around 6 PM Sunday, more than 6 hours into the operation, the 8-year-old boy … his name is Matadi … went into cardiac arrest and was immediately taken to the Intensive Care Unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A. We’re told he’s now in stable condition and is slowly recovering.

The report also stated that the emergency happened toward the end of the surgery, which began at 11:30 AM.

OFFSET’S FATHER CALLS CARDI B ‘SPITEFUL’; SAYS ‘ENVY & INSECURITIES’ LED TO BREAKUP

At this point it’s not known if the surgeons had completed the surgery, but based on the schedule they were literally operating under, it most likely happened as they were wrapping up.

Matadi and his family were staying at the Ronald McDonald house in Los Angeles leading up to Sunday’s procedure. Mutombo, who met the little boy during a visit to the Congo, greeted the boy and his family when they landed Wednesday in Los Angeles.

As you  can imagine, for all the obvious reasons, young Matadi’s tumor was life-threatening. What’s just as bad is that he was also shunned by his community. The story goes that the boy’s parents were forced to pull him from school and keep him confined to his room because of unrelenting hate he was getting.

*Richard Williams, father of tennis champions Serena and Venus Williams, has revealed that he’s suffered a series of strokes which have left him barely able to speak. He’s in such a terrible medical condition that he has given power of attorney to his son who acts as his interpreter.

The former tennis coach also claims in court documents against his estranged wife Lakeisha, 38, that she forged his signature on mortgage papers which transferred his Florida home into her name, the Daily Mail reports.

The couple filed for divorce in 2017, after seven years of marriage. They have a six-year-old son, Dylan.

The documents detail how Mr. Williams suffered two strokes and now relies on his son, Chavoita LeSane, 45, who has been given power of attorney and acts as his translator. The documents state Richard suffers from a neurological condition which limits his speech.

Williams reportedly filed another lawsuit last June, accusing his estranged wife of stealing his social security checks. He then sought a restraining order against Lakeisha, claiming she was stalking him and LeSane, who filed a similar suit.

*Video of a brutal, nasty fight of Washington Redskins player Montae Nicholson beating the crap out of a man at 2am Tuesday morning on a Northern Virginia street has found it’s way to TMZ Sports.

Here’s more via TMZ:

Nicholson — wearing a red hoodie — is going after another man in a jean jacket while other people in the melee desperately try to restrain him.

But, Nicholson is too strong and too angry — and refused to back out … instead, he throws several punches at his target … including a knockout blow.

You can see in the video, the man in the jean jacket appears to go limp as Nicholson hits him clean in the face.

One witness tells us the other man in the red sweatshirt was trying to break up the fight — but Montae was in such a rage, he slammed that guy to the ground and continued the beating.

Loudoun County Sheriffs eventually responded to the scene and arrested both Montae and a female companion. Montae was booked for assault and battery, and drunk in public. He was hauled to a nearby jail and released on a $2,500 bond a short time later.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden says Nicholson will NOT play this weekend in their critical game against the Tennessee Titans.

When asked if Nicholson would be benched for the rest of the season, Gruden said he hasn’t made up his mind yet.

He still has to speak with Montae personally.

*Four years after Ray Rice, 31, knocked out his fiancée in an Atlantic City elevator, the former Baltimore Ravens running back is now reflecting on his past anger and speaking out about domestic violence.

“I hate that person,” Rice told “CBS This Morning” on Tuesday regarding the infamous 2014 tape that showed him dragging his now-wife Janay Palmer Rice,  unconscious and out of an elevator. The Ravens cut Rice after the shocking moment caught on camera.

“I hate him … Somewhere down the line everybody who’s sayin’, ‘Does he deserve a second chance for football?’ And this, that and the other — I actually got my second chance.”

Rice and his wife sat down with Gayle King to discuss life after that now infamous night at the Revel Hotel and Casino in February 2014.

“One of the underlying issues for me was — I never wanted to ask for help,” Rice said about the personal problems he was dealing with prior to the incident. “Football, for me, was my counseling. It was my therapy. It was my psychologist. It was my everything.”

Rice says his mother experienced “a bad relationship” when he was a kid and it influenced how he began to normalize “abnormal things.”

“I was a man at 11, and then at 21 I got drafted and became a boy,” he said. “Yes. We didn’t have a physical abuse problem. But I can say there were different forms of abuse that take — that took place. Was it emotional? Financial? You get to the physical, and that’s obviously, like, if it’s one time, it’s still one time too many.”

Rice’s interview with King comes on the heels of security footage that emerged recently from a Cleveland hotel that shows former Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt kicking a woman. Hunt was also quickly cut by the team.

“Well, obviously, you know, you look back and you see the similarities,” Rice said of the two incidents. “Early on you could feel like, ‘Why they keep bringing my name up?’ You can make excuses or you can actually do the hard work.”

Janay Rice married Ray weeks after he physically assaulted her and says she still has never seen that footage.

“I was there,” she said. “I lived it. I don’t really need to relive it over and over again just to appease the world.”

“But I think what’s misunderstood about us is that the friends we were before the incident,” Rice said. “That’s why, like I said, when I look at Kareem Hunt, I wanna know what his life was like. I want to know what happened in life. I know Kareem has apologized and has expressed remorse for survivors of domestic violence.”

She added: “And I’m not here to force people to understand,” she said. “It was never a thought whether I was going to leave or not, because I knew that that wasn’t him in that moment. This is somebody I’ve known since I was 15 years old. I knew that we had work to do, and I was willing to move forward and put in the work.”

Meanwhile, Rice has no interest in returning to the NFL.

“The pressure I was under of being a star, that was the person I hated the most,” he said.

*We previously reported that the Super Bowl was having trouble finding acts who will play with its feature attraction, Maroon 5, for the halftime show.

According to numerous reports, artists are reluctant to take part in the 13-minute production because of the controversy concerning blacklisted former footballer Colin Kaepernick and the NFL’s stance on a player’s right to protest.

But TMZ confirmed yesterday that Travis Scott has been added to the small lineup of stars who will perform during the Super Bowl LIII halftime show at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Feb. 3. There are rumors that Cardi B and Big Boi have agreed to perform as well.

Talk about some absolute BS!

Put yourself in Andrew Johnson‘s place. He’s black and a high school wrestler. He’s getting ready to do his thing, but before he can, out of nowhere the referee (who just happens to be white) tells him that if he doesn’t have his dreads snipped, he won’t be allowed to wrestle in the important match.

Oh yeah, the whole thing was caught on video!

The incident went down at Buena Regional High School in New Jersey. Johnson, wearing a cover  dreadlocks, was about to compete when referee Alan Maloney stepped in and shut him down, so to speak.

Maloney told Johnson his hair cover was not good enough and gave him 2 choices — ditch the locks or forfeit the match.

*If you ask UFC welterweight champ Tyron Woodley about the incident that happened to black high school wrestler, Andrew Johnson, he’ll let you know quickly that he beyond pissed about what happened.

Earlier we reported that a white wrestling referee (Alan Maloney) made Johnson cut his dreadlocks before he would be allowed to wrestle just moments before his match was to begin (you can see it via the Twitter video below).

As far as Woodley is concerned, what the ref did is grounds for his ass to be fired. Period. End of story.

By the way. Before becoming the UFC force that he currently is, Woodley was an All-American wrestler at the Univ. of Missouri. Prior to that, he was a FORCE in the high school wrestling community.

Woodley straight up tells TMZ Sports … the ref, Maloney, should have been fired years ago when he reportedly made a racist comment to an African-American man back in 2016.

STARS WALK AWAY FROM SOCIAL MEDIA AS PLATFORM TURNS TOXIC

The bottom line for Woodley regarding what happened to Andrew Johnson is that Woodley is just plain tired racists … or folks with racist behavior being allowed to have positions of authority. And, yes, that includes police officers. Woodley also thinks the way the high school wrestling community handles hair maintenance … specifically with black athletes … is ridiculous. He also giving big ups to young Johnson for for blocking out the B.S. and winning his match.

MY ALTERNATIVE LIFESTYLE: I’VE GOT THE POWER

In other Tyron Woodley news. As far as his next match, it appears his next title defense remains in limbo as folks await an announcement for the UFC 235 main event, which is Woodley’s targeted return date.

MMA News reports:

It would seem that the most likely option is Kamaru Usman, what with Usman already having signing a bout agreement for the fight and all. However, it is hard for many people to let go of the hope of seeing Tyron Woodley and Colby Covington settle their grudge first. Tyron Woodley and Colby Covington are among those who carry this hope, and Covington believes that this is the only thing he and Woodley agree on:

“We agree on one thing and one thing only…and that’s that we want to fight each other next,’ Covington said recently on “Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show.”

*If you’re still in your feelings (as you should be) regarding how the high school wrestler was made to cut off his locks by a white referee, well then we’ve got some good news for you.

The referee, Alan Maloney, who ordered Andrew Johnson, a black high school wrestler to either cut his hair or forfeit the match, is now being investigated by NJ state athletic officials, reports TMZ Sports.

As we reported earlier, Johnson – a Buena Regional High School athlete – was seen on video getting his dreadlocks snipped before a match this week.

*LeBron James is speaking out again and this time King James is putting the NFL and its owners on blast by comparing it to the NBA.

The way James sees it, the big difference between the two leagues – who are both dominated by black players, by the way – is the level of respect shown to the players.

The LA Lakes star made his views known via his HBO show “The Shop.” James, who has been extremely vocal about race relations recently, had this to say about the NFL’s owners:

“In the NFL they got a bunch of old white men owning teams and they got that slave mentality,” James said. “And it’s like, ‘This is my team. You do what the f— I tell y’all to do or we get rid of y’all.”

While speaking on the issue, James had an audience that included LA Rams/NFL star running back Todd Gurley, actor/rapper/businessman/activist Ice Cube and his friend business partner, Maverick Carter. James then made it clear that he’s grateful that the NBA is the league that accords players the level of freedom NBA players are allowed to express themselves and voice their concerns.

“I’m so appreciative in our league for our commissioner,” LeBron went on. “He doesn’t mind us having…a real feeling and to be able to express it. It doesn’t even matter if Adam agrees with what we are saying, he at least wants to hear us out. As long as we are doing it in a very educational, non-violent way, then he’s absolutely Ok with it.”

WRESTLING REF (ALAN MALONEY) BEING INVESTIGATED OVER FORCED HAIR CUTTING INCIDENT

You don’t have to strain your brain to find examples of what James is referring to when it comes to the NBA letting players express themselves. Remember when LeBron and his then Miami Heat teammates wore hoodies to honor Trayvon Martin. They also showcased ‘I Can’t Breathe’ warm-up shirts in honor of Eric Garner. Then there was James, along with Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, and Dwyane Wade … speaking out against police brutality at the ESPYS.

*Shaquille O’Neal has shared a health update on son Shareef following his heart surgery on Dec. 13.

During a summer practice, the 18-year-old UCLA freshman said he “felt funny,” after which doctors discovered an irregularity with his heart. O’Neal underwent a procedure to fix the condition and the surgery reportedly corrected an electrical issue with his heart. He will reportedly miss the entire 2018-19 season with a medical redshirt and plans to return to basketball next year.

When TMZ caught up with Shaq at the Magic Wheels Toy Giveaway in L.A., he revealed that Shareef is continuing to focus on his recovery and hopes to be back on the floor as early as April.

After undergoing the surgery, Shareef’s sister Mimi posted a picture to his Twitter account showing all was well: “I made it,Thank you for all the love and support! I really appreciate all your thoughts and prayers, that’s what helped me through this surgery. I’m on the road to recovery, and I’ll be back soon…better than ever.”

In the clip above, Shaq also weighed in on Lil Wayne recently saying he thinks Kobe Bryant is better than Michael Jordan.

When asked to pick his #1 — Shaq “went with someone else entirely … not Magic Johnson, not LeBron, not himself,” TMZ writes.

Meanwhile, Shaq has been doing his Shaq-A-Claus holiday toy drive for 26 years — giving out thousands of toys to kids in need. He started the initiative back in 1992 reportedly after someone close to him asked to borrow money to buy gifts for underprivileged kids.

*A very disappointed Michael B. Jordan just can’t believe rapper Travis Scott is actually going to take part of the upcoming Super Bowl 53 halftime show with rock group, Maroon 5.

The actor says Scott’s move goes against what Travis should be standing for.

Without calling him a hypocrite, like Al Sharpton did (see below), Jordan insinuates that Travis is betraying the boycott against the NFL for how it’s treated Colin Kaepernick and its handling of the kneeling controversy.

“We’re still trying to stand behind something right now,” Jordan says and suggests that – by taking the Super Bowl gig – Scott’s setting the cause back.

The “Creed” and “Black Panther” icon is still holding out hope that Scott’s participation is just a rumor. Unfortunately, as far as we can tell, it’s real.

*Superstar b-baller LeBron James just found out that even though he’s famous and rich, he’s still gotta be careful about the words coming out of mouth. Or as far as this story is concerned, the the words he typed into his Instagram account.

You see, Bron finds himself “out there” all because of a comment he made about “getting that Jewish money”

Here’s the deal … via TMZ:

Long story short, LeBron says he thought it was a “compliment” to Jews.

James was actually quoting a lyric from the 21 Savage rap song “ASMR” — but there was a backlash online from people who felt someone as famous and powerful as LeBron shouldn’t be pushing old Anti-Semitic stereotypes.

“Apologies, for sure, if I offended anyone,” James told ESPN … “That’s not why I chose to share that lyric. I always [post lyrics]. That’s what I do. I ride in my car, I listen to great music, and that was the byproduct of it.”

“So, I actually thought it was a compliment, and obviously it wasn’t through the lens of a lot of people. My apologies. It definitely was not the intent, obviously, to hurt anybody.”

MICHAEL B JORDAN PISSED AT TRAVIS SCOTT / AL SHARPTON CALLS RAPPER A ‘HYPOCRITE!’ – WATCH

Despite LeBron’s intent, there have been hundreds of books and articles written over the years about why the “Jews and Money” stereotype is a dangerous one.

Quite simply, it’s been used a rallying cry to fuel anti-Semitism for hundreds of years.

As far as the NBA is involved, ESPN reports he will not be fined for the posting the lyrics.

It’s 2018 — LeBron should’ve known that probably wasn’t a good idea.

*Earlier this month, Kevin Durant explained to Bleacher Report why he thinks being LeBron James’ teammate could be challenging both on and off the court.

“So much hype comes from being around LeBron from other people. He has so many fanboys in the media. Even the beat writers just fawn over him. I’m like, we’re playing basketball here, and it’s not even about basketball at certain points. So I get why anyone wouldn’t want to be in that environment because it’s toxic. Especially when the attention is bulls-t attention, fluff. It’s not LeBron’s fault at all; it’s just the fact you have so many groupies in the media that love to hang on every word. Just get out of the way and let us play basketball.”

Durant thinks it’s the media who are creating this “toxic” environment. And while he and James eventually spoke on the phone about his comments, Lebron was not happy when he initially read it.

In an interview with ESPN’s Rachel Nichols, ‘Bron had this to say:

“I was a little pissed off when I first heard it – to be honest. I didn’t know where it stemmed from. So I was pissed, my family was pissed, and my friends was pissed. We just didn’t know why, at this point and time in the season, my name or what I’ve done in my career was kind of talked about like that. I don’t feel like it’s ever been toxic around me. And when I hear “toxic,” I automatically thought, “toxic” is like you don’t wanna be around that because it’s almost like a fatal disease.

“But got a phone call from KD. We talked about it. He mentioned how he felt and how he felt the story took a twist. And as a man, I don’t hold on to things too long. I’m too happy in my life right now, and I don’t hold on to anything that will take away from my happiness. … Listen, he told me how he felt, and he apologized on how it came out. And I said, All right. We moved on from there.”

James summed it all up by saying “he told me how he felt, and he apologized on how it came out. And I said, all right.”

*Cardi B was allegedly in talks with the NFL to join Maroon 5 during their Super Bowl halftime show performance in February, as she features on the band’s recent No. 1 hit “Girls Like You”.

But according to multiple reports, the “Bodak Yellow” rapper “is holding out.”

“She doesn’t want to do it unless they roll out the red carpet for her,” a source close to the negotiations said. Cardi reportedly demanded a fee of up to $1 million, plus a solo spot in the halftime show.

As noted by Page Six, artists are not paid for the halftime show but are given a “gift in kind” by the NFL to cover production expenses.

Other sources close to the Grammy-nominated artist claim she turned down the halftime show in support of Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback who protested police brutality and racial injustice by taking a knee during the playing of the National Anthem before games.

Cardi said earlier this year that she would perform at the Super Bowl when the NFL lets Kap play again.

A rep for Bronx native told Page Six, “The rumor circulating that she wants a million dollars and she wants her own set is false. There was never a firm offer to begin with for a performance. There [were] talks about it, but she was not particularly interested in participating because of how she feels about Colin Kaepernick and the whole movement . . . But again, there was never a solid offer for her to say yes or no to regarding the Super Bowl. She is already confirmed to do a set with Bruno Mars that weekend.”

Meanwhile, rapper Travis Scott has been hit with backlash after agreeing to hit the halftime stage at Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta, with Jay-Z said to be trying to talk him out of it.

*The parents of the 16-year-old biracial varsity wrestler who was forced to cut his dreads before a match have spoken out for the first time since the incident.

The attorney for Charles and Rosa Johnson, Dominic A. Speziali, said in a statement that the conduct of the referee who forced their son, Andrew, to cut his hair “appears more egregious as additional information comes to light,” kdvr.com reports.

They allege the referee told Andrew his hair and headgear were not in compliance with league regulations, Speziali said in the statement.

When Andrew suggested he could push his hair back, Speziali said the referee refused because the teen’s hair “wasn’t in its natural state.”

So the high schooler was given an ultimatum: Cut the locks or forfeit the match. He chose to have his hair cut.

Video of a trainer cutting Andrew’s hair with scissors ahead of the match quickly went viral on Friday.

“The referee is behind them directing her to keep cutting until he was satisfied with the length,” Speziali says in the statement.

Andrew’s parents said that wrestling taught him “to be resilient in the face of adversity.”

“As we move forward, we are comforted by both the strength of Andrew’s character and the support he’s received from the community,” they said.

“The blame here rests primarily with the referee,” Speziali says in the statement. “And those that permitted him to continue in that role despite clear evidence of what should be a disqualifying race-related transgression.”

The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association is reportedly investigating the incident. As is the office of the New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal, as part of a 2013 agreement with the NJSIAA “to address potential bias in high school sports.” the report states.

The referee won’t be allowed to moderate matches until the incident “has been thoroughly reviewed,” executive director Larry White said in a statement.

“Finally, as an African-American and parent — as well as a former educator, coach, official and athlete — I clearly understand the issues at play, and probably better than most,” White added.

Perry, the U-M starting quarterback, posted a video to his Snapchat account in mid-September that showed two unidentified individuals engaging in sexual intercourse.  Somehow – and it’s not too hard to figure out – the x-rated vid  resurfaced among the Miami student body late last month.  Oops! That’s obviously not a good look for the team and the school. Something had to give. In a statement late last week, the football program said it was aware of the video and “the posting has been addressed with the student-athlete.”

Well, the “posting has been addressed with the student-athlete” statement kinda, sorta tells you what up, it doesn’t come right out say what will be N’Kosi Perry’s fate as far as who will start under center for today’s game. Now we know. Head coach Mark Richt confirmed on Wednesday that Malik Rosier (pictured immediately above), not Perry, will get the start at quarterback for the New Era Pinstripe Bowl game against Wisconsin.

Richt, who reprimanded Perry earlier this season for acting juvenile by flashing money in an Instagram video, said Wednesday that Perry has not exactly been suspended for the bowl game [5:15pm Eastern, ESPN/ESPN App].

“He’s not suspended,” Richt told reporters, according to the Miami Herald. “He is available to play as of right now, but we feel like Malik was the guy that’s going to give us the best shot.”

Like the redshirt freshman Perry, Rosier, a fifth-year senior, has started six games this season.  Perry had started the last three contests of the regular season after wresting the job away from Rosier.

If you’re not familiar, this season, Rosier has completed 53.5 percent of his 144 passes for 1,007 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions.  He’s also rushed for another 210 yards and six more touchdowns.

*Deion Sanders was at the prime of his life in the mid-late 90’s. He had won two Super Bowls and appeared in a World Series. He was rich, had become a father and even released an album.

But as reported by The Undefeated in 1997, he drove his car off a cliff in an suicide attempt.

“I was going through the trials and tribulations of life. I was pretty much running on fumes,” he said. “I was empty, no peace, no joy. Losing hope with the progression of everything.”

Sanders recounted the suicide attempt in his autobiography “Power, Money & Sex: How Success Almost Ruined My Life.” He survived a 30- to 40-foot drop without any serious injuries. He then decided his life was worth living.

“I finally just got on my knees and gave it all to the Lord,” he said.

“Slowly, but surely, I had to deal with my faith, deal with my strength,” Sanders said. “I had to get a lot of Word in so that I could fight off the enemy. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my faith. People argue about what faith is, and who Jesus is, but it works for me. I’m not going to sit here and argue about who is what, and what is what, I’m just going to say it works for me.”

He began reading the Bible and seeking guidance from mentors such as Bishop T.D. Jakes.

“No one had told me that life would be tough going from one team to another one,” Sanders said. “Going from the enemy’s team, being one of his soldiers, to God’s team. That’s a tremendous turnaround.”

Sanders said he became committed to living a faith-first lifestyle.

“I don’t believe you can be at your optimum without your faith,” Sanders said. “Sports is sports, it’s a game. My faith is everything. It’s the gas that propels the courage, the truth, keeps me going. It’s the wind, it’s the wings, it’s the air that pumps into my lungs, that provokes me to live. Faith is everything.”

The former NFLer says he’s a member of Vision Regeneration Church in Dallas, led by Bishop Omar Jahwar.

“Finding someone that’s like-minded at this age and stage of my life is a delight to me,” Sanders said of Stand Together. “They give with no expectation, give from the heart. The want to fight domestic violence, homelessness, poverty, disenfranchised families. There’s so many things that they’re up against.”

The father of five children also works as a commentator with the NFL Network and he ministers to others.

“What people call ‘in the ministry,’ I call it ‘in my will.’ I’m in God’s will,” he said. “I don’t really get down with a lot of titles, this and that. I believe I’m just in God’s will. If he called me to minister to a group, or setting, or whatever, that’s what it is. That’s what I’m gonna do. I don’t really desire a title to go and do what I’ve been called to do. I think it’s only right to go.”

A new ESPN 30 For 30 documentary about Sanders’ suicide attempt will air January 31. The trouble began during his separation from first wife Carolyn Chambers, the mother of his two children Deion Jr and Deiondra. The end of his marriage propelled him into spiral downward with wanting to take his own life
